CHERYL
BRAGANZA is a gifted artist and poet. Of Goan origin, she was
born in Bombay and grew up in Lahore where her parents owned Braganza
Hotel (referenced in "Freedom at Midnight" Collins & Lapierre).
After studying languages and the arts in Rome and classical piano in
London, she moved to Montreal in 1966.
Essentially self-taught, her subjects vary from evocative landscapes,
lush florals to vibrant figures of Indian women.
She has exhibited regularly and established herself as a Quebec artist
with a style of her own, using brilliant color and texture to express
emotion.
In Nov.2008 she was chosen for the "Montreal Woman of the Year 2008" Award.
A collection of her Poems "Only Goodbyes" is also showcased on our pages.

"Cheryl Braganza has turned the Salvation Army outlet on Notre Dame St. W. into a cabaret. A native of Mumbai who immigrated to Quebec more than 40 years ago, Braganza lives a few blocks from the store....." - The Montreal Gazette : Read the full article

An appeal for the cause of education of Afghan girls and women:
Dear Friends, Relatives and well-wishers,
The 2008 bilingual calendar of 12 of my paintings entitled "ONE WOMAN'S JOURNEY" is finally ready. It is published by the CANADIAN WOMEN FOR WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN organization based in Calgary with whom I worked closely during the past year. It was a project that kept me focused and exhilarated while I recovered from a difficult year of my life. It is basically my story in pictures and captions - and, an uplifting story, I might add. All the paintings, digital photography and writings are donated and I receive no money from the proceeds, except ofcourse a lot of satisfaction and solace knowing that I am contributing in a small way to the much-needed education of Afghan girls and women, whose plight is desperate.
The 9x12 calendar is available on their website www.w4wafghan.ca under FUNDRAISING, or I have copies available in Montreal. The price is $16.99 Cdn (no tax chargeable). In the bookstores, it will retail for $19.99. I will gladly mail out copies overseas (Postage is $3.10 for US - $6.20 International - $1.86 Canada)
I would ask each of you please to purchase just one copy and I am counting on the ripple effect. It's a gift to yourself for a calendar on which you can scribble your appointments and at the same time, remind yourself all year (oh dear...) of this eclectic artist (!?) you know, all the while feeling good about reaching out to others in need. It is also my way of connecting vicariously to all of you, near and far, who surrounded me with strength at a time when I had none.
If you happen to know of organizations (women's and human rights) or groups that could promote, advertise or circulate the calendar, there is a BULK PRICE for 20 or more which can be used for their own fundraising. I will also be happy to consider interviews on French/English radio or TV to showcase the needs of Afghan women. Khorshied Samad, the wife of the Afghan ambassador to Canada has very kindly offered her assistance from Ottawa.
Please feel free to circulate this to your world.........
Thank you so much.
Cheryl
