Indian heritage of Architecture is enriched by its cross-cultural history that brought magnificent Mughal structures like the Taj Mahal, the towering Hindu temples like the Madurai Meenakshi temple, Buddhist. stupas, and Christian style places of worship. But the magnificence and splendor of these styles was restricted to places of worship, monuments or residences of the rulers and only the fundamental elements filtered down to the housing structures of the public, where we could see a seamless amalgamation of these different styles with the local culture and needs. A glimpse of the architectural heritage of India can be had here.
In the present Indian context, an amalgamation of the traditional local styles as well as the materials is necessary to bring about a harmony in the structure and its environment, something that is rarely practiced or even looked into, but which was successfully carried out by an English architect, and won accolades all over the world: Laurie Baker.
